The game uses the mechanics of that title, and the developers from the studio TaleWorlds, the creators of the original Mount & Blade, were invited to take part in the production process.

The player takes on the role of adventurer seeking fortune in the New World. When visiting other cities and villages expands its retinue of rz¹dnych experience and gold mercenaries, gaining a new outfit, performs various orders, and occasionally meet up as a wandering merchant. You can join one of the five factions: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, and pirates. The latter is, however, no ordinary looters, but significant and united force, which should count as colonial powers. Like mentioned Mount & Blade, the game does not involve us in role limitations, offering in return complete freedom to explore and tasks undertaken. During the game, will visit the islands of the Caribbean, such as Jamaica, Cuba and Panama, as well as a fragment of the southern coast of North America.

As in any self-respecting pirate production, perhaps the most important thing is to build a strong fleet, which will give us an advantage in many sea battles. Its members can enter nine types of ships, divided into three main categories - frigates, galleons and battleships. The authors have created a whole management system and improve the ship, which can be equipped with different types of artillery. Naval aspects from previous games will return with the player controlling Shay's ship, Morrígan. Morrígan has ashallower draft compared to Edward Kenway's Jackdaw from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, allowing for river travel. New features include new ship-based weapons such as releasing an oil slick which can then be ignited,Puckle guns, and the ability for enemies to board Morrígan during ship-to-ship combat. The arctic environment also features into naval gameplay and exploration, as certain icebergs can be rammed with an icebreaker. The underwater diving missions featured in Black Flag do not exist in the North Atlantic, as swimming causes the player's health to rapidly deplete due to the frigid water.

For combat, the game introduces an air rifle, which allows the player to silently take out enemies at a distance. The air rifle can be outfitted with a variety of different projectiles, such as firecrackers. The player can also use a grenade launcher, which fires off shrapnel grenades and other loads. Hand-to-hand combat has been slightly altered, and now enemy attacks can be countered with timing, similar to the Batman: Arkham series of games. Enemy Assassins feature archetypes similar to previous games, using skills that players have been using throughout the series; they can hide in bushes, blend in with crowds, and perform air attacks against the player. Poison gas can now be used as an environmental weapon, and Shay has a mask that can mitigate its effects.

Side missions and activities return, with a number of them based on those of the previous games. Reflecting Shay's role as a Templar, the game introduces a new side mission: Assassin Interception. These mirror the Assassination side missions in previous games, in that Shay, after intercepting a messenger pigeon carrying an assassination contract, must prevent a Templar agent being assassinated by finding and killing Assassins hidden nearby.

The main character of the game is Shay Patrick Cormac, a twenty-one year-old recruit to the Brotherhood of Assassins who grows disillusioned with their methods and their cause just as his career as an Assassin begins.He eventually betrays and abandons the Assassins after an assignment ends in disaster, and is later accepted into the Templar Order, offering his services as an Assassin Hunter after seeing some of the Assassins groups used as allies have taken to terrorizing New York. Instead of charging the Power Gauge, the Power Gauge is now filled whenever the player strikes the opponent or by performing Special Moves. The player can stock up to three Power Gauges. The player can use one stock of the Power Gauge to perform a Super Special Move or enter a "MAX" mode, in which the player '​s defensive and offensive strength are increased. Performing a Super Special Move while in MAX mode will make the player perform a more powerful Super Special Move.

Extra mode is based on the first two games in the series, KOF '94 and KOF '95. Like in those games, the player fills the Power Gauge by charging it or defending against the opponent '​s attacks. After the gauge is filled, the player enters MAX mode and like in Advanced, their character's offense and defense will increase. The player can only perform Super Special Moves in MAX mode or when the life gauge is near empty and flashing red. When the player performs a Super mode in MAX mode while the life gauge is flashing red, then the Super move will be even more powerful. The Emergency Roll maneuver from KOF '96 used in Advanced mode is replaced by the side-step from KOF '94 and KOF '95.

The King of Fighters '97 was first released in Japanese arcades on July 28, 1997. It was ported to the Neo Geo and Neo-Geo CD on September 25, 1997 and October 30, 1997, respectively. A PlayStation version was also released on May 28, 1998. The Sega Saturn version was published on March 26, 1998 and it requires the same 1MB RAM cartridge utilized by the previous game. A "Saturn Best Collection" was released on October 1, 1998, adding a new cover and a lower price. It was also compiled in The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga in 2008 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Wii. During its release week, the Sega Saturn port of the game sold 94,327 copies in Japan. As of 2004, the sales went to 156,717

Players assume the role of agents Thomas Rogan and "G" in their efforts to combat the products of the dangerous, inhumane experiments of Dr. Curien, a mad scientist.

Gameplay:

The House of the Dead is a rail shooter light gun game. Players use a light gun (or mouse, in the PC version) to aim and shoot at approaching zombies. The characters' pistols use magazines which hold 6 rounds; players reload by shooting away from the screen. A set of torches next to the magazine of each player represents remaining health. When a player sustains damage or shoots a civilian, one of their torches is removed. The player dies when all torches are lost. First-aid packs are available throughout the game which restore one torch. These are found either in the possession of civilians whom the player has rescued or inside breakable objects. Similarly, there are also special items located in breakable objects that will grant a bonus to whoever shoots it.

Throughout the course of the game, players are faced with numerous situations in which their action (or inaction) will have an effect on the direction of gameplay. This is exemplified in the opening stage of the game when a civilian is about to be thrown from the bridge to his death. If the player saves the civilian, they will enter the house directly through the front door; however, if the player fails to rescue the civilian, the character is redirected to an underground route through the sewers. If the player rescues all civilians, a secret room full of lives and bonuses is revealed toward the end of the game.

Story:

Seven years later after the events from House of the Dead: Overkill. On December 18, 1998, AMS Agent Thomas Rogan (who replaced Detective Isaac Washington) receives a distressing, short phone-call from his fiancée, Sophie Richards at the Curien Mansion, the home and laboratory of Dr. Roy Curien, a renowned biochemist and geneticist. Amidst a series of ominous occurrences and disappearances at the mansion, Rogan arrives on the scene with his new partner, Agent G, to immediately discover the estate overrun with hellish creations. A mortally wounded man gives them a small field journal showing information about all of Curien's deadly creations and their weak points. It is used every time the player(s) are confronted by a boss.

It is revealed that Curien was obsessed with discovering the nature of life and death. While supported by the DBR Corporation and its own team of scientists, Curien's relentless pursuit of this goal slowly drove him insane, with his behavior growing more erratic and the nature of his experiments beginning to take a gruesome turn. Curien's plan for his research ultimately resulted in the release of his experimental subjects free into his mansion. Wasting no time, Rogan and G storm inside the mansion in order to find and save Sophie, as well as the several other scientist trapped inside, where they witness first-hand the terror unleashed by Curien's zombies and abominations.

When Rogan and "G" arrive at the mansion, they find Sophie, but she is just as soon captured by a gargoyle-bat like abomination called the Hangedman, who takes her away to the mansion. They later find Sophie in an empty room, but she is knocked against a wall by Chariot, a gray armored supersoldier carrying a blood stained halberd. Rogan and "G" defeat Chariot and attend to Sophie, who seemingly succumbs to her injuries. Rogan, in a fit of rage, goes off to avenge his fiancée by seeking out Hangedman. He and G find him on the rooftops surrounding the courtyard, where he intends to stop them. He then drops two scientists to their deaths before fighting Rogan and G. He nearly kills them by knocking them off the roof (they hang on to the edge as they continue to fight.) They finally shoot him down, causing him to fall to his death.

The two push on to find Dr. Curien, while having to fight an even larger hoard of zombies in the process. The eventually reach him, but he escapes into his underground laboratory and releases the Hermit (a giant spider crab) to finish them. They manage to kill it, and continue the chase.

Upon confronting Curien a second time, the AMS agents are introduced to his masterpiece, The Magician, a humanoid demon-esque creature that possesses amastery of fire. After Curien releases the creature from its incubation chamber, the Magician reveals itself to be self-aware, refusing to serve any master; Dr. Curien is subsequently killed by his creation. To prevent the Magician from escaping the mansion and destroying the world, Rogan and 'G' confront it in one final battle. Before dying, the Magician gives one last, chilling warning, and then explodes. Rogan and 'G' leave the mansion, taking one last look at it from the outside.

There are, however, alternate endings that the player can achieve upon completing the game. One ending, in which the camera pans to the foyer one last time; the doors open, revealing Sophie to be alive, running towards the camera saying "Thank you!", showing that her injury from earlier did not kill her. Another shows Sophie has now become one of the undead—the last corpse remaining, all depending on the player's final score and the number of continues used.
